Madonna Is 50 : "She Should Go Home and Be A Woman"
There’s nothing that pisses me off on a Saturday morning more than a CNN special (or some other network, can’t really remember) with a bunch of ignorant people telling their stupid opinion about the Pop Queen Madonna. That’s exactly what happened last Saturday. I woke up, TV was already on since Hubby was awake, there are these young British woman in the street saying how Madonna is 50 so she should pretty much just go home and wait to die. One woman ticked me off so bad I wanted to reach inside my monitor and shake her senseless when she said, “Madonna is 50, she should go home and be a woman“.
Umm excuse me? And what does a woman who is 50 years old should do to be a “woman”. Should she knit some booties for her grandchildren? Should she cook and clean for Guy Richie? I want to freaking know what Madonna should do when she goes home to be a “Woman” because she’s 50 years old?
There’s nothing wrong with a Woman who chooses to be a Stay-At-Home-Mom/Wife. I used to be one, Now I’m a Work-At-Home Mom/Wife. Sure a woman can clean, cook, do laundry, dishes, drive all the kids everywhere, take care of the kids while the husband brings home the bacon. There is nothing wrong with all of that. But that’s a woman’s choice. Madonna chose to be a Pop Star. She is just as worthy as anyone who chose to be a SAHM, WAHM or someone who runs an executive company or whatever profession are out there.
Surprisingly, no one makes a big fuss about the Rolling Stones being old hogs? Oh Wow! Maybe Elton John should go home and stop being Gay as well? Sting, he’s a few years older than Madonna. He should go home too right? How about Paul McCartney? He’s more than 50, maybe he should totally accept that his Beatles career is over? Prince turned 50 on January, I didn’t hear anyone calling for his retirement?
Some even said that if Madonna was their Mother, they’d be so embarrass watching her dance and sing on stage. Well guess what you ageist AND sexist pigs, your Mother doesn’t look as good and as fit as Madonna. No one does. Madonna can out-perform any 20 yr old Pop Star. She can probably out-last them in her work-out routine, any day. And your mother is not a Pop Star. Being a Pop Star is Madonna’s career. She tried acting, she sucked at it. So she’s doing what she loves best in a career that made her famous and catapulted her into being a Pop Star Icon. Instead of celebrating a 50 yr old woman who doesn’t look like she’s letting her age dictate her life at all, some people are acting all medievally ageists and sexists. I’m sure she will retire sometime but who are we to tell her when? Let alone telling her to go home and be a “Woman”. Geez, what century do you live in?
What made me sad even more is that these comments came from women are in their early 20’s. I’m no feminist by any means but I do a little bit of “I’m A woman Hear Me Roar” when the woman truly deserves it. Madonna deserves it 10 fold and more.
It’s just ironic how the comments were spouted by young women who live in a country with a Queen who can’t bare to step down and retire her crown so her son whom by the way is not getting any younger himself could actually experience being called a King. Yeah, how do you like them freaking apples?

Dexie - Great piece! And I so agree. I saw Madonna at the Traverse City Film Festival a couple weeks ago, and she’s amazingly fit and toned. Her daughter was with her, and she didn’t seem the least bit embarrassed. :-)

Thanks Jane. If I was Lourdes I’d be chanting how great my Mom is. AND that she’s 50. All Young Women should be proud of that.

I agree, with the exception of just one thing. In all essence, Madonna is more than just a pop star! The truth is she’s paved the road for young female entertainers. I still remember when the music world thought she was too risque yet doted on her every word (and image which explains the infamous book). She’s broken through numerous glass ceilings in more than just the professional world, her personal life as well.
It’s a shame people can’t look beyond the surface - if only they knew how much Madonna has influenced the world we live in today!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How outrageous. I think Madonna is an example of how women shouldn’t subscribe to the ageism in Hollywood and society at large.
Great post, Dexie :)

Mare, definitely. And thanks for adding the ageist bit. I’ve been holding this rant inside for 2 days I missed to add that part.

Jeanne, indeed. It amazes me how the media keeps talking about her age. Older Men in the music business don’t get the same treatment.
