Leona Lewis SPIRIT Review
April 9, 2008 by Dexie
I got my copy of Leona Lewis’ SPIRIT Album yesterday and I’m not disappointed. I first heard of Leona Lewis through a friend of mine from Europe. She’d always talk about the X-Factor show and how great she is. I’ve read news reports comparing her to Mariah Carey. That really piqued my interest. There’s a lot of wannabes out there claiming they sound like Mariah Carey and then they end up on the American Idol Rejects…LOL. I heard Leona’s first single, Bleeding Love and fell in love with it. I tried to decipher any Mariah Carey similarity but I really don’t hear it. After listening to the whole album, maybe there’s a little bit but not a whole lot. More after the fold…
SPIRIT consists of mostly ballad songs. Except for 4 upbeat ones(I’m You, Forgive Me, Misses Glass and Whatever it Takes) which wouldn’t necessarily be the next anthem for dance club songs. Here in the US anyway. Don’t know how it works in the UK. I Will Be which is one of my favorites is co-written by Avril Lavigne.
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face has a little bit of folksy, lullaby style into it.
The way Leona Lewis sings is heartfelt. Very sentimental. Vocally, she definitely has the pipes but I appreciated how she wasn’t screaming in the album. If she really wanted to I think she could’ve gone through the roof with all the shrieking and bravados to prove that she could hang it with the likes of Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera but she didn’t. Because of that I give Leona Lewis SPIRIT Album a score of 4 out of 5.
